Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The course starts when you purchase it and start accessing the materials and it never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own. The best part is that the course material is continually upgraded and expanded, so the course only becomes more valuable as time goes on. You will have access to the new material at no additional cost!
This course sounds awesome and I can't wait to get started! What are the lectures like?
That's great! The lectures are high-quality videos with an emphasis on beautiful visuals and minimal text with narration in a very conversational style - the opposite of boring PowerPoint presentations. The lectures range in length, but average 10-15 minutes each so you can easily fit them into your busy schedule. Check out the curriculum to learn more, and email approachingcollege@velvetframe.org with any questions.
Does Approaching College help with the college admissions process, SATs, etc.?
No. There are no tips to increase your SAT score, tricks to win over admissions officers, or guidelines to write the perfect personal statement. The course doesn't teach you "how to apply to college", but does talk about how to get in the right mindset to approach the application process. Approaching College gives practical tools for understanding and navigating the emotional, social, and intellectual challenges that come with the transition from high school to college, as well as the unexpected bumps in the road. It provides a customizable personal growth roadmap and communications strategy through the lectures and resource guides.
I'm a student who is already overloaded with the demands of the college admissions process. Why should I make time for an online course?
Approaching College is entirely self-paced, so you can review as much or as little of the material as you want at a time that works for you. It is a course in the sense that it has a specific curriculum, but there are no exams to study for, papers to write, etc. Approaching College focuses on important non-academic topics around the college transition, so you have a space to focus on the issues that may have taken a backseat during the busy application process.
My student is too young to be preparing for college. Is this course for us?
Yes! Since Approaching College is not specific to academic experience or class years, a younger student could definitely benefit from the course material. In fact, engaging with the course topics earlier can help them to have more time to understand the concepts.
Your background doesn't include college counseling or college admissions work. How do you know how to help college-bound students?
The college experience is one of many important life transitions that a person can make. Everyone has "first day of school" moments when they have to start from scratch and get adjusted to a new environment, new people, new expectations, etc. This course happens to focus on young adults going to college. The common theme is, "how do you teach a person to successfully navigate personal growth opportunities, to communicate more effectively, and to become their own best advocate?" That is my professional expertise as a communications specialist, mediator, and coach.
Can I interact with other students in the course?
Absolutely! Everyone who is enrolled in the course can participate in the discussion forum to ask questions and share ideas with each other. When you enroll in Approaching College, you are part of a larger community and support network of college and college-bound students and their parents who are all going through the same things as you are.
I'm interested in 1-on-1 coaching to get personal attention. How do I get started?
Great! Please email approachingcollege@velvetframe.org to get started. I will follow up with more information.
What if I am unhappy with the course?
I would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact me in the first 30 days and I will give you a full refund.
The promo video mentioned a webinar series. What is that about?
The webinar series will pilot in 2017, and will feature guest experts to talk about different topics in the college preparation and transition process. Enrolled students will have the option to upgrade their Approaching College subscription to include the webinar series.
How do I get in touch with you?
Feel free to email any questions to approachingcollege@velvetframe.org. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
